Productivity suffers when you're in an unfamiliar place. The way a laptop keyboard cramps your hands is sometimes enough to keep you from getting the job done right.

Here are four technology "must-haves" for the mobile office, plus some tools that can boost your productivity while you're away.

The Right SoftwareIt isn't just downloading the necessary applications onto your laptop or PDA, it's also knowing whether the programs are suited to a mobile office. Is your email program built for the road or adapted from a bigger application meant for a corporate network? Do the programs work together on your laptop or do they freeze when your processor gets busy?

These considerations can become big issues when you're travelling. That's something Tab Stone, a doctor from Los Angeles, knows all too well. He installed a new email program on his laptop before leaving on a recent trip, but it wasn't suited for mobile use. He had to uninstall it shortly before takeoff, but that disabled his backup email program. That meant he couldn't download any messages to his PC. "I could not fix whatever was corrupted with either a fresh download or a copy downloaded from the internet," Stone recalls.

The latest: Contact-management software programs let you integrate data with your PDA, so you can download and synchronise contacts, calendar appointments and notes to your Palm Pilot or Pocket PC. There's also a web-based version for travellers who either lose their laptops or prefer to work from a desktop at their destination.

What's next? Look for more integration between applications for wireless users. Contact managers are already assuming the role of email program, address book and database. The next step is making it more accessible to people who are using cell phones or PDAs.

The Right Hardware I'm not talking about owning the newest laptop computer. I'm talking about hardware that's created for life on the road. Let's face it: A lot of the gadgets on which mobile professionals depend aren't made with travellers in mind. For example, when Joachim Martin's laptop battery ran out on a recent flight, a helpful flight attendant offered to recharge it in a "secret" outlet in the back of the plane. "The batteries charged," remembers the software developer. "But when I got home, they were dead." The power source had to be replaced. Blame the airline, the battery manufacturer or even the unfortunate business traveller for not knowing better, but this kind of thing happens often. Phone plugs don't always fit; neither do power outlets. And a lot of the gadgets we rely on are traveller-hostile, impractical or both.

The latest: Some hardware manufacturers are meeting the demand for traveller-friendly hardware with add-ons such as the Stowaway XT Keyboard. I've also been impressed with Microsoft's Mini Optical Mouse, which frees you from the restrictions of your laptop's finger-cramping pointer.

What's next? As the convergence between cell phones, PCs and PDAs continues, it wouldn't surprise me to see devices that offer the ergonomic comfort of a desktop with the portability of a PDA. It won't come a moment too soon for many road warriors.

The Right Connections Connections are everything to the mobile office.

Remember Stone, the doctor without email? He eventually accessed his messages through an unwieldy web connection. Spencer Field, who recently returned from a trip to Melbourne, can also tell you about email trouble. He learned upon arrival that the dial-up numbers to his internet service provider (ISP) didn't work. "I thought that was probably the end of my online access," he says. "As a last-ditch effort, I let my fingers do the walking and checked out the Melbourne Yellow Pages for a local ISP." He found one and signed up for a one-month email account which gave him access to local numbers on his entire itinerary.

It isn't just internet connections that matter, but also hooking up to other devices such as cell phones, PDAs and laptops. Technologies such as Bluetooth let you communicate with other devices in an office or hotel room without the need for cables.

The latest: According to a recent AT&T study, the top barrier to working from a remote location is access to a high-speed data connection. Fast wireless networks are springing up everywhere - in hotels, airport lounges and coffee shops. And even though Bluetooth got off to a slow start, the concept behind it - which is to lose the wires - is fundamentally sound.

What's next? It won't be long before Wi-Fi is as ubiquitous as cellular coverage and a majority of devices are Bluetooth-enabled. That's good news for those of us who work in a mobile office.

The Right Web Applications Web-based applications are so important to the mobile office that I've decided to give them their own category, even though they technically belong in the "software" section. The web is one of the most efficient ways for a mobile worker to gain access to a back-office system, intranet or database.

My ISP offers a rudimentary application that lets me check my email from the web. I can't remember how often I've had to use it because my email program failed to work properly. But I do remember the last time. I was stuck at a meeting out-of-town and my email account had sustained a spam attack - thousands of unsolicited messages - that would have taken hours to download. Instead, I logged on to the web and deleted them all in seconds. Were it not for the web application, I would probably still be downloading the spam.

The latest: One of the most innovative Web applications is GoToMyPC , which lets you access the desktop in your home or office through the web. Another useful application for mobile users is web conferencing services such as Microsoft Office Live Meeting.

What's next? Expect these applications to become cheaper, more reliable and even more sophisticated.

Christopher Elliott writes about small business travel and mobile computing, and publishes a weekly travel newsletter.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=C_Elliott
http://EzineArticles.com/?4-Tech-Must---Haves-For-Your-Mobile-Office&id=569862

The Broadband Age

Smokin' Hot Broadband Phones Info
By Jason D. Barrett

What is a broadband phone? How does a broadband phone work? Where do I find broadband phone service? How much can I expected to pay for a broadband phone and broadband phone service? These are the questions I have asked and set out to answer in this article.

What is a broadband phone? A broadband phone is essentially a telephone that makes calls to another telephone via a broadband connection.

How does a broadband phone work? When a phone call is placed the call is routed by a private branch exchange (PBX) from a company like AT&T, SBC, or Sprint. The difference is that the data from the phone call, which is the voice data from you speaking, is transferred back and forth through the internet using a technology called voice over IP (VoIP). A traditional phone transfers data over phone lines.

Where do I find broadband phone service and how much does it cost? A list of broadband phone service providers and their lowest monthly rates is below.

Broadband Phone Service Providers

Lingo - $19.99

Net2Phone - $14.99

SpeakEasy - $83.90

Voice Eclipse - $12.95

Voice Pulse - $14.99

Vonage - $14.99

ZingoTel - $14.95

I hope I have been able to answer some of your basic questions concerning broadband phones and goodluck with your future broadband phone endeavors.

Jason D. A number of reasons contribute to this growing trend. The technology behind and within notebook computers is advancing at a remarkable pace, and improvements are realized with each new model that hits the market. The notebook industry continues to grow, but as with every type of technology, errors and breakdowns can occur.

If your notebook experiences trouble with booting, if you hear noises originating from your hard drive, or if your drive is completely inaccessible, you likely need a notebook hard drive recovery.

When you perform a notebook hard drive recovery, you will be restoring failed hard drives and retrieving lost data from the drives. Although it may seem simple, a notebook hard drive recovery is not an easy task to perform. It is a more complicated process than the hard drive data recoveries on desktop PCs.

The main problem with notebook hard drive recovery actually lies in the fact that notebook computers are sealed, and specialized electronics must be employed due to their lightweight nature. In order for a notebook hard drive recovery to be successful, the internal components must be free of dust. This also allows the heat to properly dissipate, and allows the components to operate at their maximum efficiency levels.

It is important that only an authorized vendor or the original manufacturer open your notebook computer to investigate. Since the units are highly susceptible to dust and moisture, any hard drive recoveries must only be performed in a clean, authorized facility.

In order to save yourself a lot of trouble, you should make it a habit to backup the data stored in your notebook at least once a week. This is the single most highly recommended notebook hard drive recovery tip. Just be sure that backing up your data is only done on the network or, if necessary, on portable media. If a network is unavailable, you can use portable media for storage to ensure that the backup works one hundred percent of the time. Without this backup, you will need a professional to provide your notebook hard drive recovery.

In the worst-case scenario, you've forgotten to provide data backups, and you need a professional notebook hard drive recover. Rest assured, there are many experts available to recover lost files and repair your drives. Most of the notebook hard drive recovery companies specialize in recovering files, whether they were deleted through formatting or by accident, from mechanical drive failures or due to outside forces like water or fire damage. If you choose to have your notebook hard drive recovery performed by a professional, you can expect a success rate of over 98 percent. The services of most professional companies are warranty compliant, but you should verify this before agreeing to the service.

If lost data has slowed you down or brought your productivity to a grinding halt, call a professional for notebook hard drive recovery. You, and your notebook, will quickly be on the move again.

Linda Miller enjoys writing for several web sites, on home business and computers and work at home topics.

Article Source: http://www.articlecube.com

The Sneak Preview Of The New Mobile World

Why Video Email And Web Conferences Is The Next Big Thing! by Bruce Seah
Why video email and web conference is the next big thing! As a quick checklist, be sure to bring along the following:
1. Power cord/adapter
Having your power cord and adapter is a must. You never know if an appointment will go longer than expected, you may have extra time to sit and work on your laptop, or the opportunity to charge the battery may just present itself. If you find yourself to be very forgetful, buy a second power cord and adapter and leave it in your bag – that way you cannot forget it.
2. Mouse
Even though your laptop comes with a pointing device built in (either a touchpad, track point, or other device); sometimes you may require the precision of a regular mouse. Also, if you are working for an extended period of time, a mouse can reduce the amount of strain put on your hand. Usually, a USB mouse is probably the easiest to pack as most laptops have a free USB port that you can use. Should you decide to bring a wireless mouse, be sure to pack the receiver and an extra set of batteries.
3. Office supplies
You should always have some basic office supplies in your notebook bag such as pens, paper, paperclips, stapler, etc. Bring those items based on what you would or could use in an average day. Be sure to bring at least one paperclip, just in case your DVD or CD drive won’t open – you can use the paperclip to open it in a jiffy.
4. Spare battery
If you have a spare battery; be sure to bring it with you. Just make sure that you charge the battery before you go out on the road – it won’t be much good to you if it is not charged up.
5. Removable Media
You never know when you might have to burn a CD or DVD, make a backup for a client, or create a “hard” copy of something on your hard drive. Bring some CDs and DVDs (provided your laptop has a CD or DVD burner) along just in case you might need them. Also consider bringing along a USB flash drive with you, as it makes it easy to transfer information from your computer to another.
6. Computer cables
Be sure to bring all the cables you might need. Ethernet, USB printer cables, phone cable (should you use dial-up or need faxing capability), FireWire, power cable, etc. If you bring along a digital camera, don’t forget about bringing the USB cable to hook it up to your computer.
7. Headphones and headset
Be sure to bring some comfortable headphones. Not only do they give you some privacy (if you are listening to music or a book on tape), but it is also courteous to others around you.
Bring a headset as well. Since the introduction of voice-over-ip (VoIP) telephone service, as long as you have an internet connection, your computer can be used as a telephone. It is also handy when you are chatting or using voice-recognition software (for example Dragon Naturally Speaking.) You can get both wired and wireless (via Bluetooth) depending on your notebooks’ capability.
8. Travel surge protector
At home, most people would plug their notebook into a surge protector. On the road most people do not take the time to do so. Bring along and use a travel surge protector – for five to twenty dollars it will protect your investment.
9. Laptop lock or alarm
Bring along an anti-theft device for your notebook. Get a lock or an alarm that sounds when your laptop is moved - it will protect you machine from being stolen.
This is not a complete list but rather a sample of what you should bring. Depending on your situation you may bring a printer, USB hub, external disk drives, etc. Just be sure that when you do leave home, the above items are in your laptop bag. You will need them.

Written by Marc Norris, owner of LaptopsBlog.com. Looking for good notebook blog with mobile computing advice? For instance, you may love taking digital photos with your camera, but do you have a computer or laptop that is compatible? Do you have a digital camcorder and you want to play around with digital video editing or that you'd like to hook up to your TV at home? Maybe you love your webcam, but your computer doesn't have sufficient memory to keep up?
If you plan to buy, or have bought an inexpensive refurbished laptop, what do you need to power all of these nifty features? Once you have everything ready, how do you actually use everything together?
Here is a quick guide to using various components and accessories with your refurbished or used laptop computer!
Using Your Camcorder with Your Used Laptop
You can if you have an S-Video connector. S-Video-In allows you to connect laptops to a television or camcorder or VCR to transmit their signal and be able to view them on the laptop's display. S-Video inputs use a four-pin jack to receive video signals from camcorders, gaming consoles, TV, or any device that has an S-Video out port. The S in S-Video stands for separate: S-Video connections transmit the chrominance (color) and luminance (brightness) portions of a video signal along different paths, allowing them to be processed separately. This is a common way to display content from a digital camcorder or any device that has an S-Video Out port.
S-Video Out: Connects a plasma or newer TV to your notebook to display video content streaming from the notebook. The most common way to connect a TV to a notebook, S-Video Out uses a four-pin jack to send signals from your notebook to your TV or anything that accepts S-Video In.
This feature is not standard to all laptops, so you need to check the feature list to make sure it is included if this is something you whish to do.
Using Your Used Laptop and a Web Cam
If you want to use your laptop and a webcam to talk to relatives or friends across the country it is best to have the same camera on both sides of the connection to be able use all the features of the cameras.
You can talk by using cell phones or telephones or can use instant messaging or even send e-mails back and forth. Using the webcam will allow you to see each other to add another dimension to the phone call.
You will need the following:
· A computer. · An Internet connection (the faster the better). · A connection from the laptop to the webcam (most common is the USB, others include Serial, Parallel, etc). · Two cameras. · Software (from the webcam vendor or from others, like Microsoft).
If you already own the webcam then check the systems requirements to determine what you need in the way of a laptop, should you not already own one. If you aren't sure about which webcam to purchase then check out the reviews at ZDNet to get a better idea. Logitech (a market leader) has a low priced webcam the QuickCam® Communicate™ for $49.95 (on their website). It requires Win 98 or later OS, P3-700 MHz with 64MB RAM if you use their VideoCall software for broadband. It costs less than $6 per month if you sign up for their one year plan.
Free software you can use for video chatting with friends includes: Microsoft's NetMeeting. It includes video in multiple directions, chat, and audio. The systems requirements of NetMeeting are minimal as it will work with a Pentium 90 and Win 95 or later and a 56K modem. EyeballChat is another option. It lets you chat live, share messages, music and photos and communicate securely. Its systems requirements are a Pentium II 400 MHz with at least 64 MB RAM. Another option is a web based conferencing tool for $9 per month like MegaMeeting Personal
So now you know how to use a refurbished laptop and how to buy a refurbished laptop that can help you use exciting accessories like your WebCam or your camcorder! The possibilities are endless and so are the savings!

Apple Laptop Historical Pesona

The Brief History of Apple Laptops by brenda moore
The release of the Apple laptop was the product that helped put Apple back on top in the computing world. For years, Apple had been appreciated by graphic designers, artists, and other visually minded people who appreciated the plethora of graphics programs on Apple’s computers. And for this reason, Apple became entrenched in a niche market and struggled gain footing as a serious competitor in the computing world.
But with the launch of the Apple laptop, Apple was able to finally break free from this restrictive mold. Apple was able to separate itself from the crowd with a visually appealing product that catered to the customer’s needs and wants – a powerful computing machine that was easy to use.
Apple laptops, such as the iBook and PowerBook models, were visually unique also. They stood apart from other laptop designs with their trademark sleek white or shimmering silver color and a curvy design that lacked edges. These laptops appealed to both the upper echelon as well as the common dweller.
The Apple laptop also incorporated accessibility into its design. This Apple product was different in that it could be used with PC and Windows products, which is one of the attributes that helped propel Apple beyond its constrictive refines. Apple users were no longer restricted. Another plus is that the Apple laptop tended to outperform comparable laptop PCs.
The novel design of Apple laptop even included a built in trackball which served to set it even further apart from its competition. No other laptop manufacturers included such a feature that was integrated as well. With the Apple laptop, the trackball was placed in front of the keyboard making it easier to use and much more comfortable will.
Apple even managed to package its laptop into a smaller space than other PC manufacturers. The Apple laptop was less than 2.5 inches thick and only covered an area slightly larger than a letter-size sheet of paper. And in addition to that, it weighed in at only 6.8 pounds, while its PC counterparts averaged well over 8 pounds and lacked many of the features found in even the cheapest desktop system, such as hard drives and mice.
By incorporating features that other laptop PCs did not include, the Apple laptop managed to gain footing in the IT world and propel itself to the top of the ranks. And by remaining on the cutting edge of technology, Apple shows no signs of slipping yet.

Brenda has is a frequent user of the apple laptop but also uses the dell laptop. She's gotten her last apple laptop for free, via the free laptop website.
Article Source: http://www.articlecube.com

Caring For Your Laptop by Elizabeth Lord
After spending your hard earned cash on a notebook pc, and relying on it in a variety of ways, some time should be spent looking after your investment to make it work more efficiently, and to prolong its life.
The Screen
Some notebooks come with their own cleaning cloth. If not, ask your local pc store about a spray or what is best for cleaning the display. Do not use household domestic cleaners. As a last resort and if your budget is stretched, just use a damp cloth. Make sure you unplug the power from the machine before you start cleaning.
If you are using a spray, never apply it directly to the screen, as it can run down the screen and into the circuitry. Instead, spray a small amount onto a soft cloth and then very carefully wipe the screen. Do not apply too much pressure. Never use tissues or even a wool based cloth as these can damage the display with scratches and also leave behind residual fibers. The best type of cloth to use is something similar to the cloth you use to clean your sunglasses.
The Battery
If your notebook is going to be left idle for more than two weeks, or it will be continuously plugged into AC power, take the battery out. If your notebook spends most of its time plugged into AC power, it’s a good idea to run the battery down once a week until it is completely flat, and then fully charge it.
The Keyboard
Over time the keyboard on your system will collect dust, food crumbs and all sort of other rubbish. After a while the rubbish works its way between the keys and actuators and makes typing less accurate.
As a way of dislodging some of the build up in your keyboard, turn off your notebook, open up the screen and then turn it upside down. Being very gentle, shake it sideways a couple of times and tap on the underside and around the edges of the case. This should remove some of the larger particles.
If you want to take it one step further, you could try using a can of compressed air to blast away the dust etc. Just be careful you don’t jam objects in place even tighter.
To clean up the keys, use a lint free cloth moistened with water. Go very easy on the water as you don’t want the water to seep anywhere.
The Chassis
To give the chassis on your laptop a clean, it is a very good idea to contact the manufacturer first, on their tech support line, for advice on how to clean your particular model. The reason for this is there are so many different types of materials used in the making of cases.

(c) Copyright www.cheap-laptops-guide.net All rights reserved. Do you think of laptops in the same way many of us do: a fairly small portable computer that can open and close like a suitcase, with all of the capabilities of a desktop. Acer laptops have a well-deserved reputation for being some of the best laptops in the world.
Refurbished laptops have been around for a long time and will remain so because people everywhere are catching on to the incredible savings. And, refurbished laptops are definitely worth the value and savings. Refurbished laptops are a good value as the customer gets upgraded models with faster speeds, more memory, and more features at a discounted price.Refurbished laptops are computers that have been bought new by a consumer and has been used between 1 day and 3 months.
Do not sacrifice quality for a special price, first priority is to make sure you’re buying laptops that can get the job done. And don’t let the small size fool you, laptops are very powerful.
Full laptops are the style notebook you’re used to, they range in size and weight, but are generally much heavier and bulkier than the other options. Refurbished laptops are considerably less than a new notebook computer and the best part is that it is easier than ever to hook up a home network.
Many new laptops can cost thousands of dollars while most refurbished laptop computers usually cost less than a couple of grand, and often less than $500. The major reason for the trend with laptop computers, is that they have simply become more of a tool and less of a novelty. Also, the evolution of dual core processors is big news in the laptop world and as they become more common in the marketplace it will be interesting to see how they cope with the multitude of applications that will be thrown at them.
No matter what awards for best rated laptops or what percentages of the world market that Acer acquires over the next few years, you can be sure that Acer will continue to put out the innovative products that they are known for. Personally, I think of used Toshiba laptops as retaining the same quality as the day they were bought, with solid keyboards, which made them expensive to buy, but also means that on the second hand market they hold their value.
Used laptops are those that have been used by a consumer for any length of time and then resold. No matter how you feel about laptops, they - and their successors - will be around for a long time. Of course, no matter how fascinating it is to think about the portability of laptops, there should be some concern about making work so portable. You should take a look at the software that is featured on Apples laptops and desktop computers.
The advances in computer electronics have brought us to the point where we can take these mobile and portable notebook computers all over the world. We can conduct business from home with our notebooks, and even connect our laptops to a computer network in San Fransisco from a coffee shop in Texas.

Keith George always writes about valuable news & reviews. A related resource is Acer Laptops. Several aspects should be taken into consideration as for the purposes of such acquisition. If the main purpose of buying a computer is for occasional use, regardless if it is for work or entertainment activities, one may consider buying a traditional desktop computer taking in consideration that its price is usually lower than the portable version.
The maintenance and eventual upgrade of a desktop computer is also much easier to perform and less costly. If the buyer is looking to spend the least amount of money, definitely the desktop computer models offer more choices of finding better deals weather it is used or new. One may look around the local computer stores for special deals or may consider browsing the many possibilities offered online stores.
Perhaps the greatest feature a desktop computer has is the fact that quite often it can be upgraded and personalized to suit the user needs without having to be sent back to the manufacturer. In most cases a local authorized computer store can perform the technical changes or upgrades to satisfaction. The desktop computers are meant for work and leisure as well and regardless of its configuration or how fast it can perform, it seems that it became an everyday tool of modern times.
On the other hand, if the main reason for the purchasing of a computer is portability, then in this case the notebook will be the right choice. There are several brand names available on the market offering all kinds of configurations, from very basic up to the most sophisticated and powerful late models of notebooks. After a careful research on which model will better suit your needs, then you will still have the option to choose to buy a new, reconditioned or used unit for the sake of saving some money. Keep in mind that a reconditioned laptop purchased from a computer store, usually comes will full warranty, just like as if you had purchased a brand new model but for a much less cost.
Just like any other purchase, it is important to do a careful research to find out what exactly your needs are and what are you going to do with it. The lightweight and portable notebooks are much nicer to carry around even though they are usually more expensive. Also the lightweight models almost always have a smaller screen and a more compact keyboard than traditional models of notebooks. So, in this case if weight is not a critical issue, than you may just consider to purchase a traditional regular-model notebook as long as it meets your requirements. If you choose this later option you will certainly be saving a great amount of money.
If you are the kind of person who feels skeptical about purchasing a reconditioned computer, because it has been previously returned from the manufacturer, relax, some times there is absolutely nothing wrong with the returned unit. It may have just been a matter of model preference or some minor detail that didn`t quite match the previous owner`s preference. Keep in mind that a reconditioned notebook with a full warranty is just as good as a brand new one and maybe even better for the great discount it usually offers.
Also you may find some good deals in refurbished notebooks. Beware that the difference between refurbished and reconditioned notebooks is that the former is usually an older notebook that has been used and then reconditioned, often by a third party, and the later usually means that it had some problem, went back to the manufacturer, got fixed and now it is available at a fair discount price with full manufacturer guarantee.
The right solution for one`s computer related tasks, whether desktop or notebook, will depend mostly on one`s working or leisure needs. Search carefully for the best deals and avoid paying extra for accessories you will hardly use. Also take a look at reconditioned (full warranty) computers. The price will certainly surprise you. And the performance might too!
Roberto SedyciasIT Consultant
This article is under GNU FDL license and can be distributed without any previous authorization from the author. Your laptop computer can contain your entire life, from important work through to downloaded music, personal photos, and even confidential bank and credit details. With this in mind, of all the items you carry with you on a daily basis, your lap top computer should be the one that you take most care of.
There are a few golden rules to follow when it comes to keeping both your computer and the information contained in it safe. Some of them are simple, and easy to follow, others require a little more discipline to keep on top of, but bearing in mind the value of both the computer and its contents, it is essential to take its security seriously.
The reason why laptop computers are so popular with thieves is exactly the same as why they are popular with regular people. They are convenient, stylish, and portable. We like them because they allow us to work on the go, thieves like them because they can pick them up and go before we notice.
The first rule to follow is that if you do not need your laptop, leave it at home or at work. Why run the risk of getting it stolen by having it with you if you don't need to?
Whenever you have your laptop with you in a public place, whether you are working or not, do not let it out of your sight. Do not leave it at the table in a restaurant when you go to the bathroom, and if you can possibly avoid it, carry it with you at all times. You should also avoid leaving it on show in your car. If you must leave it in the vehicle, make sure you lock it in the trunk rather than leaving it on display.
Because the data held on your laptop computer can as valuable to a thief as the computer itself, you should take measures to protect your files. Passwords might make accessing documents inconvenient, but they could make the difference between a thief getting access to your bank account or not.
One last important thing is to always back up your data regularly. If the worst happens, and your computer is stolen, don't risk losing months of work just because of one scumbag. Copy essential information onto a desktop machine, or a pen drive to ensure that if you lose your laptop, you can get up to date quickly rather than losing time collating information that you have lost.

James writes for ADPmods. Or should I say completely awestruck.

When Thomas first whipped out his laptop with its cover pasted over with a thin layer of vinyl, his friends surrounded him and peppered him with questions.

Drawn by the commotion, I also approached the group.

COOL DESIGN

What I saw was his cool laptop topped with a most funky-looking laptop skin covering almost the entire surface of the laptop cover except for a thin border of exposed surface around the border of the laptop skin.

There were broad wide swirls of electrifying blue of different intensities set against a stark black background. The whole laptop skin seemed to radiate a life force, an expansive energy field, sucking me into the infinite universe.

EASY TO REMOVE

We were all curious about his laptop skin.

"Hey Thomas, how do you remove this skin?" one of his friends asked. Thomas proceeded to demonstrate how to do so.

Removing the laptop skin was actually quite simple. All you need to do is to start from one of the corners of the laptop skin, and continue pulling until the whole piece of laptop skin comes off in one piece. There was none of the sticky residual adhesive patches - which is a common phenomenon with other stickers or decals - left on the laptop cover.

EASY TO APPLY

Applying the laptop skin is also a simple matter. First, align the skin with the four edges of the laptop cover. Next, remove the backing sheet from the underside of the laptop skin. Lastly, apply gentle pressure evenly so that the laptop skin sticks to the laptop cover without any air bubbles.

The question had to come:

WHERE DID YOU GET THIS COOL LAPTOP SKIN?

"I got this cool laptop skin from Garskin," Thomas answered. "In fact, they also call their laptop skins Garskins. They also have a loyal following who call themselves GarFans.

I admired his laptop skin, and silently resolved to get my own laptop skin. I have since started my own collection and am the proud owner of 5 Garskins.

Garskin.com prides itself in fusing artistic designs into the latest leading-edge laptop skin technology. Garskins, as they call their laptop skins, exemplify the highest standards in aesthetic design and quality. The problem with any Toshiba laptop review is that it is looking at a particular Toshiba laptop such as the Toshiba satellite out of context of the rest of the models. As such, many Toshiba laptops reviews have looked at a laptop in it’s own merits without ever having the opportunity to try other models in the range which may be better.
First of all, a laptop is a very personal purchase. People have different needs, and what is good for some will not be good for others. I have seen in more than one Toshiba laptop review mentioning that one laptop is the ‘best’ of the range/series/brand. Such claims are false and cannot ever be substantiated. A few years ago I bought a three thousand dollar laptop with all the bells and whistlers, yet after two months I realized it wasn’t what I wanted – way to big, battery life was way too short, and I just couldn’t be bothered using it for its intended purpose so I bought a new one for half the price. It was so much better, not because of its specs on paper, and not because of what some reviewer had wrote about it, but because it was what I needed. So instead of listening to what is said in a Toshiba Laptop review, listen to yourself for once!
Just remember this, laptops are different than desktops. For most people they have been told for years whenever you are buying a new computer, get the best so it is “future proof”. I don’t believe this is the case and so differ from most Toshiba laptop reviews. It is not about how good it is on paper, it is what it does for you.
As most people know, Toshiba has been making quality notebooks/ laptops for many years and this will continue, but rest assured that if you are buying one now, it will last you quite a few years. Technology is not moving as fast as you think it is. By all means read a Toshiba Laptop review, be educated, but don’t rely on what someone else says in choosing one model against another. Toshiba Laptop Reviews can only tell you so much, more important is your needs, your intuition and your idea of quality (which Toshiba is renowned for).
Jane has written for many tech blogs for the last 5 years, writing about computers, technology and reviewing a range of IT and tech products. Many are made available in standard colors like slate blue and silver, yet are still attractive and functional.
Of course, no two laptop users are the same, just as no two laptops are used for the same purpose. The serious businessperson will appreciate the design of his laptop as is, and leave all the necessary bells and whistles on the hard drive. For the creative user who wishes to establish an identity, a laptop skin may be the ticket for computer enhancement.
What is a laptop skin? Essentially, it is a vinyl covering that affixes to the top shell of the laptop computer. As you open your laptop to work, whether at school or the coffeehouse, people will be able to see the design of your choosing. Think of it as wallpaper for the outside of the computer. Laptop skins may replicate famous artworks or display logos of favorite sports team, or may enhance the look of your computer with a psychedelic or quirky design.
A quick Internet search for laptop skins will land you hundred of leads on retailers. Depending upon the style and size of the skin, you can expect to pay at least twenty dollars to dress up your computer.
Why do you need a laptop skin? Some might dismiss skins as a frivolity, but under certain circumstances laptop skins can be quite functional.
Identity
When you create a custom designed laptop skin, you are creating an identity. In a sea of conformity, where everybody uses similar styles of computers, one can get lost. Having a laptop skin reflects your personality and may even establish your unique qualities. Plus, if you're in a crowd and have set down your computer, you will be able to find it much more quickly!
Protection
Depending upon the style of skin you use, you might find it protects the clamshell quite well. Having a laptop skin can guard your shell from dings and scratches and whatever else befalls a computer during transit.
Marketing
A custom laptop skin can enhance your brand, which is especially helpful if you sell products. Create a custom skin with your business logo, URL, or phone number. Your laptop becomes a small billboard that everybody will see as you work in coffee shops or other public places that offer free wireless. Twenty dollars is great investment for lasting advertising.
Whether you use your laptop for business or pleasure, you can jazz up the staid appearance with a functional, attractive skin. PDA's hit the mobile business world and exploded into an overnight sensation. Laptops use to be a rare purchase, but are becoming almost as common as a regular desktop now. Tablet PC's haven't taken off like everyone had hoped, but they do have some great uses. PDA phones and other internet ready phones are almost a necessity, not only delivering email and internet, but now video and other mobile entertainment. What could possibly be next? How do you get better than what we have now?
Introducing the Ultra Mobile PC (or UMPC) standard. What is an Ultra Mobile PC? It's a standard developed by Microsoft, in what they dub the "Origami Project". An Ultra Mobile PC will be similar to the tablet pc, but much smaller, and with a much more specific purpose.. to deliver information and entertainment "on the go", in a small form factor mobile pc. It would essentially be a cross between an internet ready pda, and a tablet. A UMPC will be larger than any pda on the market, but still small enough to carry around easily, without all of the bulk you get from a laptop or tablet.
It's important to remember that UMPC is a standard though, like the term PDA is a standard. There won't be two exactly alike, except maybe certain brands that have similar models, but they will all be similar in most ways.
So how is a UMPC going to be so small, yet powerful enough to do anything?
Well, quite honestly, it's actually pretty simple to make such a thing so small and still powerful. Without a full sized keyboard, with a touch screen replacing any mouse or touch pad, and with usb and memory stick slots replacing floppy and cd drives, you've reduced the necessary size tremendously. So you essentially end up with something nearly as powerful as a laptop, yet less than half the size, and so much easier to carry around.
While most of the specs from the different brands will be slightly different, here are some features that you can come to expect among most Ultra Mobile PC's.
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
128 MB of memory (or more)
7" diagonal display (or smaller)
800 x 480 wide screen resolution
Integrated touch screen
Integrated wireless and or bluetooth
USB/Firewire
Various memory stick slots
Much longer battery life than a laptop
Flip out, slide out, or simple on screen keyboard
It's also important to note that the price tag is looking to be between $600 and $1000, though I would expect those numbers to drop over time, similar to any other new computer products. I'm sure there will be some extremely high end models as well though, depending on the stats, but this is what the market is saying right now anyway.
A UMPC won't be a replacement for a pda, and it won't necessarily be a replacement for your laptop either, I see it being more of a companion to all of the above. You probably won't want to type up an essay on it without a full sized keyboard, and you most likely won't want to carry it around with you all day just to view your calendar like you would with your pda.
So what would you use a UMPC for then?
Well that's simple really.. everything else. Mobile internet, music, movies, games, research, news, and about everything else you would have to lug out your laptop for or go sit at your computer for.
How great would it be to be able to do most of the things you would normally do on a computer or laptop, easily on a portable device? Not only at home, but on the go?
Looking for recipes while you cook
Comparing online prices and other store prices while you're out shopping
Checking the news while you're waiting at the doctors office
Getting directions while you're trying to remember how to get to your aunts house
Easily chat with your friends while you watch tv
Download your favorite movies, shows, or music, anywhere, anytime.
The possibilities are endless, and I could go on forever talking about the things you could do with an ultra mobile pc. The point is that when UMPC's hit the mainstream, they're going to change the mobile world as we know it. I don't know about you, but I can't wait.
-------------------------------
This article taken from Computer Discounts Guide - Ultra Mobile PC's (UMPC). The adhesive layer ensures that the laptopskin stays fastened onto the laptop cover. A good adhesivelayer will usually allow for easy and clean removal of the laptop skinfrom the surface of your laptop.
In general, laptop skins have good scratch resistance qualities makingthem ideal for protecting your laptop from fresh scratches. They come indifferent finishes, with lamination and varnish being the most common finishes.
Also, because of the injection of certain chemicals, some high quality laptopskins can even withstand extreme heat and cold, radiation and chemicalcorrosion. They are even resistant to tear, water and sunlight-fade.
Good quality laptop skins typically employ the latest in high resolutionimage technology to render photo-realistic image quality and exceptionalcolor density, therefore you can not only protect your laptop but also beautifyit. Imagine being the envy of all the on-lookers when you are using yourchic-looking laptop with a great-looking laptop skin on your laptop.
Laptop skins sold in the market typically only cover the laptop cover whileprotective keyboard covers are sold separately. Also, do note that the lamination layer in some lousy quality laptop skins may come off within 6 months. Therefore, it always pays to invest in a goodquality laptop skins such as garskins.
If you are looking to protect your laptop or give it a new look, www.GarSkins.comprovides great laptop skins for both your laptop exterior and your internal keyboard for only one affordable price.
Donald Lim is the technology editor at Nu Edge Technologies. The design is functional and fantastic and would have a huge impact in the developing world. But the fact that the computer has to come from the government rather than through the public markets raises skepticism. Doing so limits the impact the laptops are going to have.
The problem is that it is limited to ONLY developing countries. Selling to the public would allow market forces to take the project to a greater level of empowerment and allow it to be measured up with ther products in the market. I am interested in this project not because of what it could do for the Children, because despite the promotions, only a very small amount of children will ever get their hands on this machine. But because it has opened a new door for less is more products. Somebody in the developed world that just needs a basic laptop could buy one of these. It would follow the same pattern the DACIA Logan has in Europe. The car is selling in Europe as strong as in the developing countries it was intended for.
The OX-9 will have a bottom-up shake up. on one side allowing kids learn programming and other computer skills early creating a new class of customers. On the other hand it would influence how technology is used in the developed world. To the advocates of the OX-9, sell it to the public as well as selling it to governments of developing countries and unleash the full potential of this innovative project.
Tonami Playman is a computer science student at Knoxville college.
